The rhythmic thump-thump-thump of the baseball bat against the ball was almost hypnotic. Liam sat on the porch swing, watching the kids play in the cul-de-sac. A summer evening like this always filled him with a quiet joy. The air was warm, thick with the scent of barbecue and freshly cut lawns.

Old Mr. Peterson, the man who lived next door, was usually out tending to his roses. He took such pride in his garden, meticulously pruning and watering, often sharing the fruits of his labor – literally, he grew the most fantastic tomatoes. He seemed to have no worries, no stress, just the simple pleasure of his garden.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in vibrant hues of orange and purple, a helicopter landed on Mr. Peterson's perfectly manicured lawn. A man in a crisp white shirt stepped out, conferred briefly with Mr. Peterson, then handed him a briefcase. Liam leaned back on the swing, the gentle creaks of the wood the only sound.
